Principle #1 – Alkalize
The problem with having an acidic body is many fold and is the root cause of many diseases and illnesses. An overly acidic condition weakens the body and can become dangerous. Excessive acid in the stomach can cause many issues such as: ulcers, gastric reflux, inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), excessive acid in the stomach, and heartburn. Having an acidic body can also affect the skin in the following ways: nails are thin and break easily, dry skin, cracks at the corner of the lips, hives, and dull hair with split ends resulting in the hair falling out. If you are at a loss as to why you have dental issues, being too acidic may be the culprit in the following ways: infections involving the tonsils and throat, sensitive gums and teeth, mouth ulcers, loose teeth and an increasing risk of teeth cracking and chipping, and increasing pain in the nerve of the teeth. Those of you who suffer from headaches (Migraines, Cluster, Tension) may have an acidic problem. My fellow exercise enthusiasts who suffer from severe leg cramps and muscle spasm during or after working out may also be suffering from an acidic problem. Those of you who suffer from feeling cold all the time may have a lower body temperature than normal because being too acidic. Do any of you have a “Debbie or Donnie Downer” in your life? You know, that individual who’s always down and has that voice like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Do both of you a favor and help them get a more alkaline diet. Do you feel like that you have low energy and are always tired,with tons of body aches? If the answer is yes, being too acidic may be the root cause of your problem. Men/Women, have you noticed a decrease in your sex drive/libido? Your acidity may be the problem. I know the aforementioned from personal experience. I had several tests run by my Naturopath who discovered that not only was my body acidic, but that several of my major organs were also acidic. Prior to those tests, I just thought it was all in my head. On the contrary, it was not only in my head; it involved my entire body.

Acid/alkaline imbalance causing disease is not a new concept. In 1933, Dr. William Howard Hay from New York published A New Health Era in which he maintains that all disease is caused by “self-poisoning” due to acid accumulation in the body.
An overly acidic condition weakens the body and can become dangerous. Our body requires a slight alkaline condition to function well. Blood, for example, needs to be 7.4 pH. A shift in blood pH of just 0.2 could result in death. Obviously, the body does not want to die so it is forced to borrow minerals (calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium) from vital organs and bones to neutralize the acid. A condition of high acidity may go undetected for years causing the body to suffer prolonged damage.

Some of the benefits of having a more alkaline body is as follows: increased sex drive/libido, abundant physical energy, stronger immune system, a decreased of infection and diseases, cancer prevention, help with weight loss, a decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased mental acuity and alertness, better digestion, sleep better, a decrease in headaches (Migraine, Cluster, Tension), lessening of the risks of muscle cramps and spasm for us exercise enthusiasts, less depression and anxiety, and younger-looking skin.
The best way to attain an alkaline body is by eating the appropriate foods. Balance is key. And when it comes to our body’s pH levels, it’s the key to life! pH is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline something is and what our blood pH needs to maintain a slightly alkaline level to keep us healthy. We help our bodies to maintain this pH balance by eating more alkaline-forming foods and fewer acidic-forming foods.
